Natural nail polish, does it exist?

Boshemians, there is a fine line between beautiful, lacquered nails and your quest for eco-friendly, chemical free, natural and non-toxic nail polish. We don’t believe there is such a thing as natural or non-toxic nail polish when it is essentially a long lasting paint. That doesn’t mean we don’t think there are brands that offer a less offensive alternative to heavy chemical laden formulations. If you can find a 3 free brand polish, good, a 5 free brand is even better and a 7 free brand if you can find one is best!

What does all this mean? Read further and we will explain.

The first three and what is missing from a three free nail polish brand are three chemicals that help make the base of many paints and lacquers not just in nail polish but in wall paints, furniture lacquers and wood varnishes. These three chemicals are Formaldehyde, Toulene and Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP.

Formaldehyde is a flammable, colorless gas (at room temperature) with a strong odor. It is used in everything from varnishes and resins to fertilizer and pesticides it is also an ingredient in cigarettes. The FDA states on its formaldehyde fact sheet that " Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers".

The second chemical is toulene. Toulene is found in gasoline, paint thinner and adhesives. The Agency For Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has this to say about toulene:

"When you touch products containing toluene (e.g., nail polish remover) or bathe in water containing toluene, toluene can pass through your skin into your bloodstream. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also known as OSHA describes these symptoms of Toulene exposure: Irritation of the eyes and nose; weakness, exhaustion, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache; dilated pupils, lacrimation (discharge of tears); anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia; numbness or tingling of the skin; dermatitis. Toluene exposure may cause liver and kidney damage".

Toluene affects the central nervous system, eyes, skin, respiratory system, liver, kidneys. Breathing high levels of toluene during pregnancy has been shown to result in children with birth defects and to retard mental abilities and growth. There is evidence that exposure to toluene at work is associated with spontaneous abortion. High concentrations of toluene, usually from use in a confined space or unventilated area, can cause loss of consciousness, respiratory depression and death. Long-term and repeated workplace exposure to toluene affect the central nervous system.

DBP the third chemical, is used as a plasticizer giving nail polish the flexibility to adhere to the nails with some stretch and flexibility. DBP is was added to the California Proposition 65 (1986) list of suspected teratogens in November 2006. It is a suspected endocrine disruptor says the Pub Chem Open Registry Database of the National Institutes of Health.

While these 3 have been removed from many nail polish brands like  OPI, Essie, Wet 'n' Wild, American Apparel, Sally Hansen and many other major brands, beware of wholesale, overstocked from many years ago and some beauty supply or discount store brands in which you cant verify their formulations.

We are happy to say that some brands, however, have gone a few steps further to reduce your chemical exposer through nail polish. Considering how often our hands touch our mouths, faces and loved ones these are steps in the right direction. Major brands that are 5 chemical-free have also removed Champor and Formaldehyde resin from their formulations. They include  RGB, Chanel, Deborah Lippman and Zoya.

For a brand that went all the way with a 7 free formulation removing, formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, and xylene look for the Patent Shine collection from Butter London.
